Here is my approach
Step 1: dump out all my little scraps.
Step 2: pick out colors that I like
Step 3 and 4: Make "blocks" and set them in strip fashion
It is messy, but I really enjoy the whole process. I'll be adding this to my fall Workshop Offerings. It is such a great design exercise and I feel Everyone can do it!
A pretty Kaffe fabric for the back.
Here I am proudly holding it upside down, lol Which begs the question, is there a right side up?The quilting is undulating lines with white Invisafil #100 weight.
Wee! I have finished the center and the star border of my Medallion Quilt.
I have a goal to finish this for a fall quilt show.
I hope everyone had a nice Easter. We had a quiet day and enjoyed Easter Pasta. I was able to get a little centerpiece together.
This year I watched The Ten Commandments. It had been many years and is such a Classic. It also offered 3:40 hours of quilting time :)
Gorgeous Sunset - looks like dyed Easter Eggs.
Thank you all so very much for your kind comments on my post about Gwen. I've been thinking of her everyday and I'm so grateful for all she has left us.xo
Lovely modern Mini ("Thoroughly Modern Mini" ;}}} ) this is...love that idea...and you are making nice progress on your quilting--it looks lovely hugs, Julierose
ReplyDeleteI love your medallion quilt so much, I think I want to try to make one! I've done applique before but not for a while - I think I need to work up to the amazing block! I actually just pulled out an old project from a Gwen Marston class from back in 1999...I pulled it out just a day before I heard of her passing. She was a great quilter and teacher, and so much fun! I really hope to finish my project this year. Happy Spring!
ReplyDeleteOh wow! I LOVE this little Earth Day gem. Absolutely fabulous! I love your "process" too. You should frame the photograph of your "Jackson Pollack" floor aftermath and hang it in your sewing room (or some gallery!). Your quilting is gorgeous. It must feel good to have the center done. Enjoy the day.
ReplyDeleteHi Barb, I just love your little mini...and your fall quilt...oh my gosh it is amazing!
ReplyDeleteI definitely see the Gwen influence in your latest mini. Thanks for your thoughts on her.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing all the steps of making your quilt ! I love it !
ReplyDeleteBravo :))
Congrats too for your quilting !! It's just fabulous....
Love your mini and it will be terrific for a workshop! Funny about holding it upside down. When I first saw it it reminded me of the pueblos in the desert.
ReplyDeleteSometimes the best quilts seem to make the biggest mess.
Thank you for sharing the method behind your lovely quilt! I smiled when you described the sunset as Easter eggs.
ReplyDeletethanks for visiting and leaving a nice comment!
DeleteYour little quilt is so fun and I love that big unexpected print on the back! Your medallion quilt is wonderful--hope you get it finished in time!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing a bit about your process for this darling little mini. I absolutely LOVE that you included the upside down photo here on the blog. Hysterical (and totally something that I could have done!!) I appreciate the fact that you were "keeping it real". :o))
ReplyDeleteWell, there's something about your little upside-down mini that makes it even more endearing! It says springtime whichever way you look at it! I love your medallion, what a labor of love. Hope you'll finish in time for the quilt show.
ReplyDeletehave yet to see a kaffe that wasn't pretty....
ReplyDeleteWhat a great Earth Day quilt, Barb! I wouldn't know where to begin to make something like that. You nailed it! And I love the shot of you holding it upside down.
ReplyDeleteThe quilting on your medallion is coming along beautifully. What a treasure that will be.
Fun centerpiece. I actually dug out some Easter decor I haven't had out in years and put together a little centerpiece this year.
I haven't watched Charlton Heston play Moses in such a long time.
A beautiful sunset, and a sweet final shot of Earth Day with the daffodils.
Your mini is made with solid colors. Do you recommend that for the project instead of prints?
ReplyDeleteYour mini is adorable and so fun, I need to make one too! Good idea to make it a class.
ReplyDeleteThe medallion quilt is so enhanced by your hand quilting, you are the best hand quilter I know!
I showed my "Gwen" quilt the other day at my lecture, she sure will be missed.
Love your modern mini! You have inspired me to have a go at making one myself! I am making a liberated log cabin at the moment, with a black background and bright solid scraps, and am loving it. I am sure I can find enough tiny scraps to use, haha! Thanks for such a great blog, Barb, I always enjoy my visits, and that was fun to share the upside down picture, it still looks great! xx
ReplyDeleteHi Loraine, thank you for the nice commnet. I have no way to reach back to you because your email is not on your profile.
Deletehappy friday!
What a perfect Earth Day mini! Loved reading how you made this little piece :) I wouldn't even know where to begin, lol! Perfect Kaffe fabric for the back. The quilting on your medallion is gorgeous. I'm sure you'll finish it on time for that fall quilt show. Would you believe I've never watched The Ten Commandments? Beautiful sunset!
ReplyDeleteSince you called it Earth Day I thought those shapes at the bottom were stumps! ROCK! How cool! I noticed your basting stitches on your hand quilting medallion... pad stiches like the ones I use that I learned to make in tailoring class! Good for you, they do not shift like straight stitching basting stitches do.
