Jolly January! 2026

Happy New Year!  (is it?) Let us hope so.  My first finish this year is a Japanese Rice Bag.
I did a lot of big stitch to add interest and embellished with buttons.
Whoopie!  Coco turned 16 on Christmas Day!
She is deaf and also probably almost blind, but still happy to go for a walk and have her breakfast and dinner.I am recommitting to my Jane Stickle Blocks.  You will note that I always use Jane Stickle, as Dear Jane was a book title....an idea.....not the quilt's name or makers name.  Her name is Jane Stickle.
In an effort not to repeat fabrics, I have selected all 81 prints I'll be using to make my quilt.  I am using the potholder method for construction.  Here are some blocks:
I have joined Cecile and Corrine's Sew Along this year.  The theme is triangles.  The rules are you have to make 16 different blocks with no two the same.

Here is my plan.  This will also be my semiquincentenial quilt to commemorate the 250th Birthday of America.   It may also commemorate the end of our Democracy, but I pray it won't be....  I am literally heartsick about the state of things.  You are free to feel however you wish, but this is my blog and my opinion.
Here are my blocks so far.
I continue to work on my Scrappy Star Sew Along.
My wish for you is that you have lots of quilt projects to keep you busy and happy.

If you are still here,  I will leave you with these beautiful nature photos, which have been inspired by fellow bloggers Janet, Gladi and Gail.

  2. I was going to make my JS blocks potholder method but couldn’t see how the borders would work. Anyway, all your blocks are lovely.

  3. Beautiful bag! I will have to find a pattern to make one too. I have seen them on other blogs and always admire them.
Your Jane Stickle blocks are interesting with the colours and fabrics you are using. So many possible blocks for the triangle challenge. I do hope your democracy survives this mess.
Take care. Gail at the cozy quilter
Beautiful snowy pictures. We had 10” of snow since yesterday so there will be more snowy pictures on my blog this weekend.

  5. So nice to read your post, Barb. My opinion is the same as yours! Your Jane blocks are beautiful and very fitting for the semiquincentennial. ("In wartime," as she wrote. And a war of sorts now.)

  6. Love the Japanese rice bag. Is there a pattern? After making 5 rows of JS blocks I sold it and never looked back. I would like more info on your potholder method.
May 2026 get better for our beloved country. And I need a semiquincentennial project too.

  7. I mostly can't even read the news in order to keep my sanity. I find that donating to candidates and organizations that are fighting back makes me feel a little less helpless.

  9. So many beautiful pictures! I love the start of your Jane Stickle quilt. That is going to be a treasure!
I have loved democracy and feel sick to my core seeing it assaulted and left to die each day. I am with you in celebrating what we have known. I'm choosing to hope and will continue to live it as I can... and write my state politician's to remind them of what this people wants!

  11. What I am seeing happening now in our American cities is what I would expect to see on news coverage of North Korea. The gestapo tactics in Minneapolis by this Administration should have every American calling, writing and demonstrating. I'm 75 and I have been to every demonstration in my area in Michigan from last spring to the recent January snowstorm. I want my grandchildren to know that I did something to try to save democracy from this fascist excuse for a President.

  12. Your blocks are beautiful! I'm with you on the threats to our democracy, it seems to get worse every day. But we're still hanging in there!

  13. I like your rice bag! I made one last year, using a free pattern from the 4-H Club. Mine is with modern fabrics, including linen, and has lots of Kantha-type stitching on it. I love mine. Good for you to have your big Jane Stickle quilt planned out. I'm not sure I could come up with 81 coordinated prints from my stash. Happily, I'm using-up my print stash - a goal to accomplish by 2033. I too am celebrating our country's 250th anniversary, but haven't yet designated a project toward that end. That's a good idea. I like your plan to make the Sew Along your semiquincentennial project. Have fun!

  14. Oh Jane would be so proud of you!! I do believe she is a kindred spirit, well, except for the fact that she clearly loved piecing more than I do. I appliqued whenever I could!! I think you have finally inspired me to make a semiquincentennial quilt too. I'm just having a hard time designing something that doesn't sound disgusted or snarky. Keep up the good work!

  17. So happy to see your post, Barb!
Love the Japanese Rice Bag! I have a bunch of Japanese fabrics. If I wasn't drowning in partially met goals, I would copy you. ;)
Oh, Coco looks sweet in her bow bath, and on her walk.
Kudos to you for getting back to Jane. Good looking blocks, and I like the flair your red bindings add. I can't wait to see how it all comes together.
Your design for the USA Birthday quilt, and the blocks you have made thus far, may also inspire me (along with Wendy), to create one. I do have a lot of R/W/B pieces of blocks left over from other projects that may make it a little easier to come up with something.
Such beautiful, peaceful nature photos. We can use more of that!
I am with you, in fearing for our Democracy! Hoping our Constitution is upheld, and self-aggrandizement is defeated!!

  19. HOW I FINALLY JOINED THE ILLUMINATI BROTHERHOOD AFTER MANY FRAUD

HELLO everyone, my name is Aileen, I am from Iceland, I am giving my testimony about how I joined the Illuminati brotherhood, I tried to join this organization for many years, I was scammed by some fake agent, I was so depressed that I couldn't feed myself or even pay my bills and family, and I tried to make money in different ways but everything went in vain, I was afraid to contact any Illuminati agent because I had been scammed many times and they ate my hard earned money, one day I came across a post of someone giving his testimony thanking a man named Lord Adams for helping me join the Illuminati brotherhood, then I looked at the man's email and phone number which was written below, I was really scared because I didn't want to lose contact with him again because I had been scammed many times by scammers who ate my 173,000 euros and I left with the money, and then I was so confused that I decided to contact the person whose testimony was given. I called him and communicated with him over the phone. Before he started telling me his story about when he wanted to join, he told me everything I needed to do. Then I decided to call an agent named Lord Adams, who told me everything I needed to do. He did, and I was initiated. To my surprise, I received the benefits of being a new member of the great Illuminati brotherhood. I was so happy that my life had turned around, and it was all thanks to him.
