Happy Tuesday!
My friend, Sujata, of The Root Connection guessed right! Go check out her wonderful Christmas quilt.
I'm using a chocolate brown background for my red Hawaiian quilt. Here is my small sample that I finished.
I treated myself to a Bella Solids fabric swatch card from Anna of Thimbleanna. She always has something fun going on.
I can really see what the solids look like. It is just too hard for me on the computer.
I was really able to study the reds and browns.
I also decided to do a little inventory of my solids. Well, I guess I don't have to buy red for a while, lol. Or cheddar for that matter.
It was so fun reading what my readers and friends guessed for the red applique' that I decided to do a little comparative test. I just used a raw edge cut out of the little sample and changed the backgrounds. It's been dreary here, so I had to use indoor light, not the best, but you get the idea.
Green was guessed by Karen, Dawn, Mayleen and Rachael.
Purple was suggested by Karen and Maureen.
Orange was guessed by Kate, Meredith and Sandra - you ladies know me too well!
White was popular with Lori, Karen & Anna. Sorry it's fuzzy, it did not want to photograph, it kept coming out almost black.
Rachael guessed this - she is a hoot!!
Blue was Janet's pick.
Yellow/Gold/Cheddar was guessed by Kelly, Terry, Donna & Regan.
Quilt Sue guessed black.
Fuchsia/Hot Pink was guessed by Jan and Never Bored.
Lime Green/chartreuse was suggested by Linda and Jan.
(sorry Shirl, I didn't have turquoise).
This was so fun to study. It is interesting how the value of the red changes when you change the background.
I think this would make a great quilt, actually.
Thanks for playing with me it was Fun!
Whoa! So glad you nixed those polka dots. (grin)
ReplyDeleteHow fun to see the options! Chocolate is an excellent choice! I used the same for my four block eagle top, still unfinished :(
ReplyDeleteLove the chocolate...I thought I wrote a comment, I was going to say green or black! This is going to be fun to watch...on my someday list...
ReplyDeleteI loved some of the combo's - even the polka dots!! The chocolate is a great choice.
ReplyDeleteI am thrilled!!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks great! I thought you were going to use red for the background.I was wrong!
Barb, you have an amazing story telling/blogging ability. I would have never thought of putting the samples up of all the choices. It is fun to see all of those suggested combinations and they all look quite appealing. I can see me easily getting sucked into it:)
The spool lights on the string looks adorable by the solids.
That was a wonderful little lesson on color. It was very fun with the polka dots but oh so vibrant on the brown! I should get a color card like that. Last time I guessed based on a computer picture, I then waited a month for it to come in the mail and it was SO not what I wanted!
ReplyDeleteWow! You're right -- LOOK how that red changes -- what a great comparison! I love the brown. (Ok, the polkies too, but that definitely doesn't fit the look LOL.) And thanks for the shout out -- you're a sweetie!
ReplyDeleteFun seeing all those color changes. I like the star shape in the center of the design.
ReplyDeleteHow fun was this to see all the different options! Your chocolate background will be wonderful, very rich; and how can one go wrong with chocolate??! Thanks for taking us on a tour of everyone's guesses.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun post! Love your red and chocolate.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm loving the chocolate brown with the red.....but I think you're right.....a whole quilt with these combos all mixed together would be wonderful! I'll have to keep that in mind if I ever attempt a Hawaiian quilt.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything Sujata said! What a great idea. Your spool lights are too cute.
ReplyDeleteI need to get one of those cards. The bells solids are my favorite!
Very fun!
ReplyDeleteI think that swatch card will be a great tool.
Barb, what a wonderful idea to show all the different options!! They all look wonderful! It's amazing how much the red changes against different colours! The brown is a fabulous choice, it's so rich and warm and crisp and strong all at the same time!!
ReplyDeleteAh, yes, the brown looks really good. I also like the black. Neat test - and I agree the blocks would make a fine quilt.
ReplyDeleteYou have a lot of solids. Have you ever made an amish inspired quilt?
Chocolate... a good pick. What fun to see the other backgrounds, too. Now I'm sorry I said fuchsia... the applique motif is much less distinct on it. But it's good to see that what we envision may not always be what we like in the end. I really like the green and purple, too. Thanks for doing that experiment.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun post!! So many of those background choices would have worked.
ReplyDeleteI think I might have one tiny piece of a solid....
I missed out on the guessing post, so I'll let you guess what my guess might be. It was interesting to see how the red interacted with the various backgrounds ~ lots of vibration on the green and blue. Looks like a fun project.
ReplyDeleteAmazing how the background affects the applique! They all looked good, but the chocolate will be so rich!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to get a lesson in values in your post. When I got to the applique sitting on the blue, it almost wiggled from side to side as I looked at it.
ReplyDeleteYou have a nice healthy supply of solids. The Bella solids swatch card is a great resource.
Hmmm, I think I have stash envy!! Love those solids!!
ReplyDeleteHave fun making your Hawaiian quilt. The chocolate and red combination looks great!
wow~!!~love the color study that this turned out to be~!
