Finders Keepers!

Here are a few things I recently found in my attic.  I don't really know why there were there.

This is a top.  The blocks were made my members of my group in Illinois.  The theme was "anything to do with a chicken".   Aren't they terrific?

I made the middle block on the bottom. (sorry, it was a cloudy day an the light was bad.)

Here is a little feed sack panel I purchased at the quilt show recently.  I have a dream of having laying hens when I move.  Maybe I can hang these in the coop.

Here is one of my favorite quilts.   I made it commemorate Hanna's 6th Birthday.  She was born on June 6th (6/6)  and turned 6 in '99 so it was her golden birthday bonanza of 6s and 9s.

Here are our hand prints at the time, and my little blue bird.

We called her "miss" when she was little and I designed this dandellion seed flower.

It is hand quilted and it still makes me smile.  Here is the back.  All the junk food a 6 year old girl loves.

Tonight Sharon Schamber is visiting our guild and tomorrow I'm taking her workshop on machine quilting.  Here are the 2 little tops that we had to make to practice on.  I'll show you how I did soon.

Have you ever found quilts or tops you had forgotten about?

Have a Great Week !

  1. I don't think I made enough tops in the past to "forget" any of them. Some of the ones I have churned out more recently may be forgotten with time.
Love the visual image of these textiles hanging in a chicken coop.
The backing on your "Hanna" quilt is so true to form. Have you always used clever backings, or were you ever boring, like the rest of us? : )
I am interested to see what your machine quilting class has you do with your little quilts.

  2. These are so wonderful! Your daughter's quilt is a treasure. And your Illinois group quilt is so fun! Oh yea, I forget about my quilts all the time. Seems the longer they're forgotten, the better they get.

  5. I used to have bunches of chicken quilt blocks of all types. I collected chicken items. But over the years, I have tired of collecting them. I have made a couple chicken quilts.

I especially like the quilt you made for your daughter's 6th birthday.

  9. I have join everyone praising Hannah's quilt. It's adorable and I love how you used your hand prints. I wonder if my 24 year old daughter would look fondly on a quilt if I put "my Kasey" on it. That's what she called herself when she was 2 or 3 because she heard me saying "my Kasey" so often. Ahh, memories of when they were so young and sweet.

  14. Love Hanna's little quilt! It is special for all the personality and history that has gone into it. One or two of my smaller "first" quilts may have been forgotten - and with good reason LOL!

  15. Oh my gosh - I so wish I could have laying hens! Let me know how it goes. Isn't it funny the things we put away and then find and they become even more meaningful. Both quilts you show are so playful but in different ways. The chickens are fun and Hanna's quilt is more formal. Love the pink accent fabric and the way you've included so many elements of her life. What a treasure! Hope you learn something in class.

I do find tops.. In fact, they haunt me.. I better start basting and quilting them. The top your friends made is also quite cute too. I see lots of pretty machine stitches in your future. Have fun at the class.

  21. Hanna's quilt is awesome~!!~ i love all of the personal symbolism that you included within it and she must have been excited by it as well~!
when my daughter was little we used to call her Miss as well . . . sometimes i still do.

the chickens quilt is cute and those feedsacks really fun. i can imagine them hanging in your very own cuteified hen house.
laying hens has been a dream of mine as well . . . not sure if i'll ever get there, but hey, a girl can dream.

i don't think i have ever completely forgotten about a quilt or top . . . but then again, if i were packing up to move i too might discover that i have~!

  30. Love the scarecrow block right smack dab in the middle of the chicken quilt. Love Hanna's bright, fun quilt. It was great having dinner with her Monday night. She was very patient with us "quilt ladies" and is a lovely young lady. You must be proud.

  32. Wow, you must have a cool attic! What wonderful treasures you've found. The chicken quilt makes me smile. Good luck with the laying hens. I love images of chickens, but the real ones scare me!

Hanna's quilt is just super! Love all the special symbols you added, and the handprints. What a special quilt for her.

  33. I love Hannah's quilt and what great backing. You are finding some great things. Can't believe you are storing those things in your attic. I missed how far/where you are moving to.

  34. Hanna's quilt is really special. I used that same junk food fabric with a dark background to make a stack and whack quilt for our daughter to take to college.
Years ago I took a picture of a friend holding a top she had made. I saved it until I wanted to make one then took the picture to her house and asked her for the pattern. Only her fingers showed in the picture and she didn't remember the top so she swore it wasn't her. About two years later she came to a guild meeting with the top and said she had found it in a box under her bed but still had no memory of making it. We all got a big laugh out of that and I got the pattern.
