Feeling Groovy & Giveaway!

Thank you so much for all your thoughts and comments on the current trends in quilt shows and for taking the survey.  It will be open for a while and please vote if you haven't.

Last night, my local guild the Clamshell Quilters had the reveal of this years' challenge.  The theme was "Music of the 60s".  Here is modern style entry:
Feeling Groovy - inspired by the Simon and Garfunkel (aka the 54th Street Bridge Song) from 1966 and using those plastic things for playing 45s on a turntable - Which I got on Ebay :)
A close up of my quilting to look like grooves on a record.  The binding is a groovy print too :)
I had to mark the the space between the spiral stencil that I had.  I used dots as a guide.  There are 2 different spirals to get the effect.
Here is the quilting I did after fusing the "45" area.  This is a batting view on the back.
I did this to prevent the quilting interrupting the lettering, which I fused and quilted after I sandwiched the piece.
As I have suggested in the past, I almost always have a scrap piece to try out my techniques and stitching.
Here is a signature quilt that I made in 1997.  I brought completed civil war blocks to Gwen Marston's  Beaver Island Quilt Retreat.
I free-hand quilted large fans the size of my elbow swipe.
This leads me to announce that I have a new stencil in my Etsy store here.  On the bottom is the new Large Baptist Fan Stencil.
As you can see, I filled in the missing line, which I have done on the machine but this will make it so much more even.

I'm thinking of using it on my Stars in a Time Warp.  It will work well on smaller or finer projects.
On IG I shared this sweet sewing box that I received for Christmas.  It is designed by Cath Kidston.
I finished this simple runner, a workshop sample, of a scrappy log cabin variation.
The Giveaway:
If you attended the 1997 BIQR Retreat and you are on my quilt - you are an automatic winner!  leave me a comment and I'll check the quilt.

For everyone else, leave me a comment here, take the survey, and send a friend to try their luck.

I'll pick a winner on February 2nd - Groundhogs' Day.

  1. Ok, all the quilts on the post are wonderful, but your Feeling Groovy is the best. And I have a pair of matching earrings, made from the yellow inserts for 45s! Don't tell me you collect them, too! You've inspired me to get back into my sewing room and get busy!

  2. Groooovy is awwwwwesome! I do remember those plastic things. Wow what a trip down memory lane this is, lol. The sewing box is so cute. Love all the little painted details. Is made of wood? It is a very lovely gift, lucky girl. The little runner is also very cute. I need some placemats and I believe I just found the pattern. Thanks for the inspiration.
I have already participated in the survey. ;^)

  4. Wow the quilting on Feeling Groovy is outstanding, way cool. I still have some of the plastic things for 45s in yellow. My stereo with the turnatable doesn't work any more. Darn. I have some many 45s and 33 albums. Love the fan stencil. The sewing box is beautiful. What a a great friend. Thank you for the giveaway.

  5. Now that song will be in my head the rest of the day, but that is okay. I love Simon and Garfunkel!
That quilt is incredibly clever--and where were you able to find the "45" inserts?!?
The denser lines on the stencil is a great idea--and that will be helpful for smaller projects.
    Such a fun sewing box!
Your Courthouse Steps runner is charming--very Americana looking. : )

  9. "Feeling Groovy" is a walk down memory lane. I used to take my allowance and walk downtown and buy 45's. I had a huge collection and unfortunately sold them years ago in a garage sale. Your quilt is fabulous! I love everything about it. Never would have thought to quilt it before adding the backing.

  11. I'm humming to myself and feeling groovy after seeing your twist on the song. You never fail to amaze me. I love how your imagination works. Especially the new stencil. Thank you for saving us time putting dots between the lines in the larger stencil. I've got to get to work. I see bell bottoms, flower power and VW bugs in my dreams.

  17. Fantastic! You are so clever! And, thanks for answering my question about the 45 adapters before I had to ask it. I haven't seen one of those in years! Great quilting. I hope you won a prize for that one! Good luck with the new stencil. I will send people your way. I was going to use your stencil on my Quilty 365, but it just begged for smaller circles so... And, I am green with envy for that Cath Kidston sewing box. But, it couldn't have gone to a better person!

  21. Love the little "Groovy" quilt! What an amazing imagination you have and a great use of the 45 inserts. I used to play my Dad's 45's on my Mickey Mouse record player (the one where Mickey's arm was the arm holding the needle)while jumping on my bed to the music! Great memories.

  26. How fun is "Feeling Groovy"? I will never tell you to "Slow down, you're moving too fast." That would hinder the inspiration that I get from you. How lucky would one be to win your little quilt. My usual thanks....

  38. As soon as I saw the title of your post, the music leapt into my mind and I had to go and find my Simon and Garfunkel CD's. Though I also have some of their early LP's on vinyl actually bought in the 60's! but now no way of playing them.

Loved your own Groundhog Day refrence! I have an actor friend who swears that is the best film that Bill Murray ever made. He loves it and watches it whenever he needs to cheer up.

Thank you for the giveaway. I will understand if you want to restrict it to US replies - postage is so very expensive these days and customs duties even worse!
