Smooth Sailing

Today I'm sharing a quilt I made in 1999 for my Husband's 40 Birthday.   He's been sailing his whole life, so I thought the paper pieced sailboat would be perfect for a signature quilt.  There are 40 boats, of course.

It's very scrappy.  The blocks were finished and signed at his Birthday Party


As a little joke, I put his upside down.


 I used a lighthouse panel for the backing.


This summer Rich has been playing with a friends' used Laser.   He and Andrew went sailing in it over the 4th of July weekend.


Small craft advisory?  No problem......


I can't remember is this was before or after they capsized.  


Boys just love messing about in boats, don't they?

    What a cute boat quilt. The signatures make it even more special. I have never been on a sail boat, but would like to try it.

    What a clever gift. Love that you made it a signature quilt--and put his upside down. Maybe that capsizing thing is unavoidable since you did that. : )

    Your quilts are so personal.. each one of them have special purpose and story. Love that your husband signed that up side down block himself.. I am assuming :-0 Fun photos of them out on the sail boat! Happy Monday!

    Great quilt and fun story. Love the upside down boat. I guess every sailor has to capsize at least once. Good thing they're OK.

    I love it when you show us your quilts from the past. This is such a beauty!! I love that it's a signature quilt and that you put his boat upside down. Wonderful photos of the guys out sailing.

    Such a good idea for a sailboat lover. The signatures on the sails are a good memory of the special occasion. I just made some sailboat blocks for a Country Threads quilt design.

    If I remember right the ocean was pretty bad that weekend, lots of rip currents!!! They look like they had fun!

    I love how you commemorate things with quilts. I rarely do that - not organized enough I guess. Great that Rich still gets out there and sails. Must be extra fun to have his son out there with him.

    What a great quilt. I noticed that upside down boat first thing. Hopefully he never capsizes.
    I learned to sail when I was young. It was fun but haven't done any in years.

    We had a sailboat when we were young, and now I have many sweet memories....but no quilt!! Why didn't I think of that???
