Dog Daze

woof!  that's how I feel about the recent hot and sticky weather.

This is a random post with some of what I've been up to the last 2 weeks.

I started tying my Sweet Dreams quilt last Sunday.  I had hope to be finished....but you know; Life.
As you can see I'm using Chenille needles and an assortment of gold pearl cotton thread.

I set the table with old cutting mats.
I made a very funny error on the backing, which I share next time.
I made a fabulous blueberry pie using this recipe here.
My son gave me the Broadway CD of Hamilton for my Birthday.  I became pretty obsessed with the music.
It is based on this book, so listened to it.  All 36 hours.  It was fascinating.  I can't wait to see the show one day.
At my son's suggestion I attended a free one hour iphone video class at Apple in New Haven (where he works part time).  It was great and I highly recommend taking a session I learned so much.

Afterward Andrew and I popped into the Yale Gallery.  These are installed right onto the walls.
It is a completely free Art Museum and worth a visit if you're traveling on Interstate 95, and who isn't this summer?  am I right?

This looked like a quilt.
wild.  I can't image how rough this was to work on.
Andrew reaction when he learned it was all made with liquor caps.
A video (3rd try) of humingbirds at the kitchen door.  Our record is 9 at one time this summer.
A little while back I "saved" a hummingbird caught in the garage.
Poor thing was exhausted.  They only fly up, so I got on a ladder and caught it.  Poor little thing it happily flew away.
What have you been up to?  Have a great week and see you soon.
xo

I love the hummingbird story! I can't imagine catching one. Your quilt is looking good and will be done before you know it. What a cool place to spend the day with your son (-:

After I snorted my coffee on the 'am I right' comment (you are too funny!) I really enjoyed this glimpse into your summer. I am amazed that you got photos of the hummingbird that you caught. I'm so glad that worked out well. As far as the bottle cap quilt, maybe she had to drink to forget the pain in her fingers from putting that together?

What a great Summer so far! Though with a title like Dog Daze, I was sure Coco would make an appearance. Such a tease. Congrats on the new video skills. Those hummers are hard to see in real life. And thanks for saving one.

The pie looks delicious!
I really hope to see Hamilton someday.
Can't believe that bottle cap creation! Great up-cycling. :)
The hummingbird video was fascinating. Loved when they finally perched and stopped batting their wings. I felt like I could take a deep breath. But then things got a bit frenzied at the end. Did something spook them?

You've been busy! I saw an installation of pieces by El Anatsui years ago at the Brooklyn Art Museum. They were, indeed, so quilt-like, and every single one was fascinating. There was also a film about how he creates his art, nowadays with the help of a team of apprentices. I just fell in love with it.
Beautiful coverlet, beautiful pie, beautiful art, beautiful boy!

Thanks for sharing glimpses of your private life. It looks awesome, it looks good, it looks interesting, it is so cool and can't believe you held one. Wow. Now I want to know about your blooper with the backing. :^D

such a great blogpost. Love your quilt. It will be so beautiful quilted with that thread, great choice. We have an Apple Store in our town (The Hague), one of only two in our country (the other one is in Amsterdam), I am still Android and Windows, but with Windows 10 being a disaster (I think) over the next few years, when I need a new device (laptop, phone) I will make the change to Apple. My husband and a few friends have already done so over the past few years and are happy they did. I already had a look at the free classes available in our store once I make that change and it really looks like fun. I will definitely do a few of them. Interesting piece of art........ the artist must have a lot of fun making it ;-) . That hummingbird, so sweet, never knew they were so tiny, we do not have them. Glad it is ok

I really enjoyed reading your post :) Wow! Love the backing of your summer spread! Did you plan to have your blueberry pie fit perfectly in the center of that sweet little quilt? That's amazing artwork at the museum but ouch (!) for working with those caps! So glad you 'saved' that little hummingbird. They are the most amazing birds.

Isn't it fun to watch the hummingbirds? Some of them get pretty aggressive toward each other when they are swooping around. I get a little nervous when I am stitching on the deck. I love how your quilt is coming along. I wish I didn't have so many other projects going so I could have joined the SAL, but still want to do a summer quilt--such a good idea!

Love the pic with the thread laying on the quilt. Tugs at my heart strings! And that pie... so yummy looking.:)

The hummingbirds at our feeder rarely let another feed at the same time. I'm glad you could save this one.
Chernow's book is fabulous although I still can't understand how Miranda created his masterpiece from it. Yes, the history is there but what a genius Lin-Manuel is.
Enjoy your quilt. I haven't tied one is years but can see the cutting mats will save the table.

Your summer spread is really coming along. I may still do this over the winter.

I am working on a project I am doing to honor a member of our guild that passed away in April. She was a passionate volunteer with a local group that makes quilts for seriously ill children. I told the guild if they donate fabric and cut the bricks I would put them into tops. It has turned into close to 50 40x52 running bond brick quilts all ready to piece. It was so much fun designing the tops.
The museum looks very interesting. I can't imagine working on the liquor top quilt. I would needs some after that!
I am on my way to see Hamilton on Broadway Sept 1st. I am so excited. My daughter flew to Chicago to see it but never gave up on trying to get NY tickets.
Enjoy the rest of the "summer"....whatever that is...we are alternating monsoon and tropical humidity h***! $%#@!

I always love seeing what you are up to! Summer keeps us moving doesn't it?
I can't believe you caught the hummingbird- what a saint you are!

Don't you ever wonder where artists get there supplies? I mean do you think that artist drank all that liquor? I don't think so. It kind of reminds me of the old friendship buttons and old charm quilts where they traded fabrics. He must have put out the word for liquor caps! And, I think I see a "Hamilton" quilt in your future!!

with that angle of the picture for the hummingbird in your hands it looks like the little thing has HUMAN FEET! Wow! it's a wonder the darling could fly at all!

Fun post with lots of celver things. We saw the Anatsui in Brooklyn, where they had several galleries filled with his pieces--we loved them, and the idea that trash can become treasure (think: scrappy quilts). Sweet hummingbird photos. :)

Great tip about the Yale Gallery. It's always nice seeing art with a loved one! I'm listening to the book Hamilton right now too - not sure I will finished by the 4th when I get to see it in Chicago! Can't wait. Our whole family was obsessed with the soundtrack for a solid year, it seemed.
