Basting Day!

Hooray!  Basting day is finally here for my Whig Rose Quilt!
If you can believe it, friends, I had another HUGE BOO BOO with this quilt.

While trimming the excess fabric, I CUT MY QUILT!
Nutmeg was so scared she ran under the ironing board and hid.  Me?  I was calm.  Stunned might be a better word.   Oh well, time to fix it.
I marked the area and carefully removed it.  I tried to find a place on the quilting design where I can hide it.
I carefully inserted a new piece of chrome fabric and re-marked the quilting design.
Can you see the fix?  It is easier when you know it is there.

I'm trying a new batting.  I'm going to use long basting needles and wool thread.  why wool?  I'm hoping it will grip the layers and hold them.
Good thing that chrome is forgiving!  I have a lot of seams.
I am using wide moda unbleached muslin for the backing.

In other news~
I finished the mystery quilt that my guild, Ninigret hosted.  These are Downton Abbey fabrics.  I used 9 instead of the 12.  I just thought it made a good design.
It has been super duper hot this week so made a great cold lunch salad.
Tomatos, cucumbers, leaf lettuce, feta, red onion and the best part: leftover garlic herb parm bread.  I re-heated the leftover garlic before cutting into large cubes.   A good drizzle of red wine vinaigrette and I felt I was back in the Mediterranean.   YUM
Here is my design wall.  Lots of creative crazy going on here.
Thank you for leaving such nice comments I so appreciate them.
Stay Safe and Stay Well and have a great week.
xo

I turn mistakes into creative spots. You have done well with your creative spot!

My heart would have stopped!! Great job on not panicking and coming up with a creative repair!

You know how many of us GASPED when you showed the cut?! Great save, lets everyone know everything can be fixed. I will be interested in how you like the batting.

My jaw just dropped to the floor when I saw the hole. I bet you can't wait to have this tormentor finished. It will be awesome though, so well worth it. ;^)

Oh how I love this quilt! I just can't take my eyes off it. I see a chrome yellow whig rose in my future thanks to you. Love the design wall. I do like the green better than the chocolate (can't believe I would like anything better than chocolate!) and I adore the gold floral!! Hope I get some time this weekend to work on my next round!

Well the good news is you found it when you did it as opposed to later!
I am sure I would have used some very colorful words when I did it. You will notice I said when I did it as opposed to if I did it cause I have been there and done that and do not know that I "fixed" it as well as you did.

I'm so glad to didn't lose heart with this beautiful creation. You really did a lovely job fixing it. Inspiration for the rest of us who will no likely find ourselves in the same position someday!
The design wall is also looking beautiful. I love that applique block :-) The surrounds are looking good.

Now I see how you fixed your little extra cut. I hadn't been able to visualize. BRILLIANT my dear friend, Watson!!! (HEHEHE... a little too much Sherlock Holmes these days!)
It is really going to be great.
Maybe for our encore project, something with chrome? Wendy is already scheming! I did an entire quilt made of Rose of Sharon blocks, way back when I was an appliquér. I could do it agin!! ;-)
Your urn project is looking great. Where did the four-patches go? I do love that floral for the border (last border??).

Tiny prints are fabulous for letting you mend/replace inconspicuously, and after this gem is all quilted no one will ever know anything bad had happened! I love what is happening on your design wall too!

Remained calm! yikes! A happy solution that will be hard to see. I can’t wait to see some quilting stitches go into this beauty. I’ve never heard of wool thread. I hope you’ll report on how you like it as well as the batting.

Yikes, I don't know how you remained calm. My husband cut a tag out of a dress I was wearing because I asked him to and accidently cut the dress. Have no idea how to fix it and unable to buy a new one as the vendor only does art shows.

I just gasped when I saw the cut!!! I'm so glad there was a way to fix it. The quilt top is so beautiful that there had to be a solution. It looks great and the quilting will enhance the border. Your eye will follow the quilting line not the seam line. The salad looks yummy.

Been there, done that but cursed a lot before figuring out the fix. So glad you had a nice piece of the chrome to use for the repair. And the quilt has another chapter in its story. Now the fun part begins. Ahhh, hand quilting! Keep cool!

Great job fixing the quilt!! Thank goodness you had enough of that fabric to do it. I'll bet that after the quilting it won't be noticeable unless someone looks for it. I really appreciate your sharing this with us because it's helpful for all of us to know that everyone makes mistakes and that most of the time if we keep our cool and think it through there is a reasonable solution to be found!

thanks for sharing your boo-boos with all of us...we who aspire to your level appreciate it...nice to know it happens to everyone, even prize winners!

Yup! We all gasped, but I'm so glad you shared your fix. Removing a larger section was a good idea. It seems to make it less visible along with the fact the chrome yellow print was small. Maybe more of us will be willing to share our goofs!🤣

A genius fix and thanks for showing us how you fixed it. It's an amazing quilt! Can't wait to see how you like that batting - I've heard great things about it and I'm curious about its loft. The salad looks absolutely divine.

Wow--you are good, Barb. I might have cried and thrown it in the closet. So glad you were able to stay calm and make such a brilliant repair job.
Salad looks yummy!
That design wall is looking really interesting. I look forward to seeing the finished project.

Oh my.... so glad you were able to hide the hole !! Disaster in Connecticut !!
Congratulations Barb ! Your quilt is gorgeous !
Yum yum for salads ! The best meal in summer !
Enjoy your weekend !

Oh, horrors! I'd have run under the ironing board with the cat. But you did a great job of problem solving on this. Phew! The Downton Abby fabrics made a nice challenge quilt. Those fresh tomatoes make the salad especially appealing. Well done- the Whig Rose is so lovely.

As usual, everything you do is prize-worthy! Even your “patches”! Always inspirational to see what you’re doing. The mystery quilt came out great. The salad is on my “to do” list for this hot day,

Oh no! I would have to look at it for a few days first.....I had total faith in you to come up with a solution!
You have been very productive, me not so much )-:

What a brave soul you are...and that you remained calm says so much about your personal strength. I think I told you many weeks before a Whig Rose has been on my quilt bucket list for years and yours is the most beautiful I've seen. I'm not a fan of yellow but that Chrome Yellow really sets it off. I had to laugh at the expression on your kitty's face...her eyes look at though she is terrified! Your "fix" was wonderful and I hope I can remember to do the same should that kind of boo-boo comes to my studio! Thanks for sharing... blessings from southeastern WV.

If it had been me, there would have been a few choice words said after the cutting accident ;) you made an excellent recovery and once the quilting is completed no-one will be any the wiser. I love the random background triangles (the ones that are not the main chrome fabricc) you have used in your HST borders, they add movement to the borders.
Reading about your salad makes me wish for warmer days and ripe tomatoes.

Jill said...

Oh my! I would have melted to the floor. Inspiring that you did not ‘woe is me’ and just fixed it (most likely after you recovered). I’ll be curious on the batting results.

Yikes! One of those quilting disasters we all fear! Lucky you were able to resolve it fairly easily. I accidentally snipped a very small hole in the quilt top I was almost finished hand quilting. I covered the hole with a small piece of appliquéd matching fabric. Phew! Looking forward to hearing about your adventures quilting with the wool blend.

cspoonquilt said...

Your Wig Rose is beautiful and how patient you are to repair that little snip! I would have just patched with wonder under and called it done. lol! But with all the time invested with your beautiful applique I guess it makes sense to 'do it right'.
I have used that wool batt and I like it a lot! The loft is nice and fluffy, makes for a very soft comfy quilt. take care!

Barbara said...

Oh, no! That's always been a fear of mine but you handled it perfectly! No one will ever notice the new section. Nice job! Will be interesting to hear how you like that new batting. Fun mystery quilt, too! Your salad looks yummy. There are lots of good things happening on your design wall :)

Great save! Keep calm and carry on. Each mistake is a learning process. And some of us have lots of learning yet to do to show our character. I love the Whig rose, and intend to some day make one block! I better not wait too long or my hands won't cooperate!

I love that you post about your 'fix-it' issues. So inspiring to the rest of us to never give up on a quilt! And your quilts always look so amazing in the end, like the oops never even happened!:)

Accidents like that cause me to cringe! Nice fix!!Be sure to give us a report on the batting!!
