Marvelous May

It is finally spring here in Connecticut.  Happy Memorial Day!  I've been BUSY!  Last weekend I took a ferry to block island to meet up with New England members of the American Quilt Study Group the Historical Museum.
We saw beautiful island quilts and learned about shipwrecks and salvage operations on the island.   Some of the shipwrecks were carrying calico fabric and it was spread on the hill behind the church to dry.  It is still known as calico hill.
A friend at my Ninigret Quilt Guild gifted me this shipwreck reproduction fabric a while ago.  It was so interested to learn more about it!

I loved this court house step log cabin very much.  I've never made one.
I wonder if it would make a good sew along?  What do you think?
I think it would be fun.

I also loved this nine patch.  I have a soft spot for them.
We also had a little back stage tour and saw these incredible dresses.  The first one was a wedding dress.
Check out those sleeves!
Earlier this month,  I made some Kentucky Derby fascinators for me and my girlfriends.
It sure was a sloppy run for the roses!
I taught a Liberated House workshop for  the CT Piecemakers.
This is always such a fun class.  No two houses are ever the same.
Mr fun and I have been working to prepare our new raised planters.  I'm excited to get plants.  I hope it doesn't turn into a deer buffet.
Here are my columbines.  I planted seeds last year and I'm so happy with the variety of colors.
I just returned home on Saturday night from Bridgton, Maine where I taught the Pineapple Workshop.   Here is my instagram collage.   Isn't that a beautiful sky?
Finally, I listened to this book and really enjoyed it.  It is a family story set a the base of little bighorn mountains.  It was gentle and good for the soul.
Happy Spring Everyone!  Thanks for coming by.
xoxo

Thanks for sharing that interesting story about the shipwreck and Calico Hill! I made a Courthouse Steps quilt in Asian fabrics about a decade and a half ago and would be very interested in making another in different style fabrics - not that I need another project!😊

Very informative and interesting post. I loved the Calico Hill story. In your collage of pineapple quilt blocks the lovely clouds in the sky look like a fantastic eagle flying toward the viewer. Fantastic!

I was with you at the AQSG on Block Island and glad to have found your blog. I have made traditional and pineapple log cabins and would be interested in joining a sew along for the courthouse steps. Good luck with the garden. Pamela Papazidis

What an interesting museum…wonderful to have a “backstage” tour. I wonder how many yards of fabric are in those dresses…especially those sleeves! The courthouse steps quilt —-wow! So many little strips of fabric. I would consider a sew along…
Fun class projects. I still need to quilt my pineapple log cabin from the class I took with you. Gail at the cozy quilter

What a wonderful tour that must have been. I've done a courthouse steps (still a flimsy) but not with beautifully matched symmetry like the one you showed.

Love the Courthouse Steps and Nine Patch quilts. A sew a long sounds good.

Such an interesting bit of history. To get to see the original quilts must be amazing. I have goosebumps! I keep looking at all the wonderful prints in those quilts. Thank you for sharing these beauties and the dresses too. Love, love, love the hats. Enjoy! ;^)

So interesting to learn about Calico Hill--a story I have never heard before.
I do like the Courthouse Steps quilt. Don't know that I have time to join a SAL, but I might try making a mini.
Nine-patches are a favorite of mine. Love that vintage one.
Oh, those dresses! Can you imagine stitching those gathered skirts by hand?
What great derby fascinators. You ladies look so classy!
You have such a wonderful variety of columbines.
You've been busy teaching classes. Would love to learn from you in person someday.
Your book recommendation sounds like something I could enjoy!
Thanks for a great post, Barb. Always good to catch up with you.
